Peer-to-peer overview

‘Peer-to-Peer’ is a set of fundraising tools that focuses on “do it yourself” (DIY) fundraising. In other words, these tools enable your supporters to create a fundraising page to raise money for your organization by hosting a dinner party, or celebrating a birthday, etc.

‘Peer-to-Peer’ acts as a “content management system” (CMS) for your peer-to-peer fundraising needs. A single site can be created that then hosts numerous campaign types supporters can choose from to raise money.

Using our ‘Peer-to-Peer’ fundraising platform, you can customise pages to suit whatever type of activity you want to promote, whether it’s:

  • Endurance events
  • Donating birthdays
  • Read-a-thons
  • In memoriam or tribute pages
  • Alternative wedding gift lists

Page Requirements

Before you can begin building a ‘Peer-to-Peer’ site you should confirm that your Account Data Structure has all of the fields necessary for building a donation page. These vary based on payment gateway. Documentation for which fields are required for your gateway can be found here.

If you are already processing donations using Engaging Networks then these fields should already be created in your Account Data Structure so you won’t need to do this again

Payment Field Defaults

Each donation form is created in ‘Peer-to-Peer’ by pulling the required fields in from your Account Data Structure. This means that you will need to set the default input type and default values of your form fields from the “Default Supporter Record” field properties.

Field

Description

Payment Type

You are required to define the defaults for this field before creating an ‘Peer-to-Peer’ site. The values for this will vary based on your payment gateway requirements.

Credit Card Expiration

It is recommended that you define the default values for your expiration dates since payment gateways do have requirements on how this data is passed.

Donation Amount

It is recommended that you define the default values for your expiration dates since payment gateways do have requirements on how this data is passed.

To set this up do the following:

  • Go to Hello > Account Settings > Account Data Structure.
  • Locate the field you would like to edit.
  • Click on the “edit” icon open the field properties.
  • Select the “Default input type” for your field.
  • Set the “Default Values” by clicking on the “edit values” button.
  • You will need to enter the label (what is seen on the form) and the value (what is stored in the database) for each option you would like to offer.

For detailed instructions on setting up fields please read the documentation available here

Below is an example of a “Payment Type” field setup to use with ‘Peer-to-Peer’ and how the default values are set.

Default Values

Things to consider

  • Your Account Data Structure setup counts. Make sure to setup your supporter fields with default values and a default HTML type before going live.
  • You’ve got mail – 10 email messages to be exact! Within ‘Peer-to-Peer’ there are a total of ten possible email messages that need your attention. Not all are required and should be disabled if you do not plan on using them.
  • All thank you and confirmation emails sent from your ‘Peer-to-Peer’ site use your default “thank you email sender” in Engaging Networks. These can be setup under “Hello > Account Settings > Account Emails if you need to add a new one for your ‘Peer-to-Peer’ emails.
  • Take the time to setup a default ‘Peer-to-Peer’ site with your organization’s look and feel that you can use as a template. This way you can just duplicate it when you need to launch a new campaign rather than starting from scratch each time.
  • Want to setup a “Donate your day” style site? ‘Peer-to-Peer’ makes this simple by allowing you to create different types of campaigns allowing your supporters to fundraise on their special day, whatever that might be.
  • As with your other donation pages, ‘Peer-to-Peer’ sites can be created using your own sub-domain (donate.organization.org) as long as you already have an SSL certificate setup with Engaging Networks.
  • When setting up fundraising sites in ‘Peer-to-Peer’ you are limited to one payment gateway. Depending on your payment gateways configuration you may only be able to collect one form of currency per ‘Peer-to-Peer’ site.
