Origin Source
Origin Source and Origin Source Category are stored on a supporter’s record to help identify where a record originated or how it was acquired. It can also be used to compare different channels on performance. For example, Origin Source could be applied to supporters that came in via a Facebook advertising campaign and to determine how many converted to donors.
Origin Source can be applied to a page or imported and is most typically applied to new records in an Engaging Networks account. Origin source is not overwritten once it is applied to a record (but can be cleared with an import process initiated by a User).
Creating an Origin Source
If an Origin Source value is imported as part of a supporter data import, the values in the file will be automatically added to the account in bulk.
Before an Origin Source can used on a page or in a URL parameter, it must first be created in the account. To create a new Origin Source and also access the existing sources

Using a URL Parameter
After an Origin Source has been created in an account, it can be set as a URL parameter: en_og_source
The value in the URL will supersede any value set in the page admin settings.
Importing and Updating Supporter Origin Sources
Origin source can be imported for supporters with a supporter data import. The import file should be include columns for Origin Source, Origin Source Category, and Email Address at a minimum. Supporters with an existing value can have their value Origin Source removed by using [CLEAR] for both Origin Source and Origin Source Category fields and then importing new values in another import. This is an example file:
Origin Source | Origin Source Category (must be one of the pre-defined values) | Email Address |
|---|---|---|
display_ads_facebook | test@engagingnetworks.net | |
petition | advocacy | test2@engagingnetworks.net |
[CLEAR] | [CLEAR] | test3@engagingnetworks.net |
How Origin Source is Applied to Supporter Records
New supporters can have Origin Source written if their record is created by submitting a page with an applied Origin Source or by submitting a page with an Origin Source parameter in the URL or if their record is created with a supporter data import that includes Origin Source and Origin Source Category
Existing supporters with an Origin Source will retain their original Origin Source unless Origin Source and Origin Source Category are cleared as part of an import
Existing supporters (who were not imported) without an Origin Source can only have Origin Source set via an import
New supporters who are imported in the account without an Origin Source will have their Origin Source written based on their first organic action in the account (i.e. they submit a page with an Origin Source)
Viewing and Exporting the Origin Source
The Origin Source can be viewed on individual records in the Activity Summary gadget.
It can also be filtered on by using the query builder to preview and export data.
The Bulk Export API will export Origin Source as a column that populates the first time the value is written, if you have selected it in the Data & Reports > API Options > File Format area.
It is also available as a field in Report Builder reports.
